About Us
Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) is an internationally accredited IB World School in Shanghai, founded in 2006. As the first international school in Shanghai authorized for all four IB programmes (IBPYP, IBMYP, IBDP, and IBCP), we serve over 1,100 students from 65+ nationalities on an expansive 28-acre campus.
Since our founding, WISS has been dedicated to placing the whole child at the centre of education — combining academic rigour with the warmth of a close-knit community, and preparing students not just for university, but for life.
Mission and Vision
The Western International School of Shanghai challenges and empowers students through an unparalleled IB education. We will achieve this vision for our diverse community through innovative, high-quality, inquiry-based learning and teaching, with individualized student learning pathways.
Our History
- 2006 — WISS opened
- 2010 — Accredited to offer IB PYP and IB DP
- 2012 — Accredited to offer IB MYP
- 2014 — Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); partnership begins with the UK's International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA)
- 2016 — Awarded the Prestige Magnolia by the City of Shanghai
- 2017 — Re-accredited for IB MYP and became the first IB Continuum World School in mainland China
- 2018 — His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, visited WISS
- 2019 — Joined the Council of International Schools (CIS)
- 2020 — Partnership begins with Switzerland and Italy's Sustainability Management School (SUMAS)
- 2026 — WISS's 20th anniversary
